So I make our bread – always. I don’t know the last time I bought bread from the store. Well, I do. We bought some onion burger buns about a month ago, on clearance. And that was only because we were having burgers that night and my husband wanted burger buns. But other than that, it’s probably been a good 4 months or so since I bought bread from the store.
I decided to try making homemade bread crumbs. After all, I made homemade stuffing using the bread I make, so why not try homemade bread crumbs? So off I went! Now, I couldn’t find any recipes in the Amish family cookbooks I have, so I browsed the Internet and Pinterest. I saw that everyone said basically the same thing – if using homemade bread, let it dry out. So I did. I left the bread out for an entire day (I used a loaf of Italian bread – I’ve been making this bread for a few months now and my husband loves this recipe!). Then I cut it up into even (or almost even, because I’m not perfect) pieces and laid them in a single layer (again, mostly single..hehe) on a cookie sheet.
I put them into the oven at 250 degrees and left them for about 20 minutes, until they were hard and slightly browned.
Not much difference between the two pics, right? I know…anyway, after they cooled, I pulverized them in my NutriBullet (not endorsing them or being compensated for mentioning them – it’s just what I had!) and then mixed in some seasonings. I used pepper, onion powder, garlic salt, and Italian seasonings.
Now, whenever I need some bread crumbs, I’m ready! It was really easy to do and not time-consuming at all. Plus, I know exactly what is in my bread crumbs. 🙂
