8 cups flour                                             1/3 cup baking powder

8 tsp sugar                                               2 tsp cream of tartar

2 tsp salt                                                   1 cup powdered milk*

1 3/4 cup shortening

Sift dry ingredients 3 times, then cut in shortening. Pack loosely in airtight container.

Method: 1 cup mix, 1/3 cup water

Mix, then bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes. (*Powdered milk may be omitted when milk is used instead of water when making the biscuits.)

  • Mandy’s Hints: The above recipe is written just as it appears in the book. I used butter-flavored Crisco as the shortening.
  • I halved the recipe as I don’t go through this mix that quickly.

*The Amish Cooking cookbook has hundreds (maybe thousands? I haven’t counted and don’t plan on it..) of recipes and no names were listed as to whom to give credit to for the actual individual recipes. Therefore, I can not give credit to the proper person for this quick and easy biscuit mix.
