2 cups gran. sugar
3/4 cup butter and lard combined
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
4 eggs, beaten
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Cream sugar and shortening well. Add eggs, vanilla and nuts. Sift together flour, salt and cocoa; add to sugar mixture and stir well. Bake in greased and floured 8 x 14 inch pan in a 350 degree oven, until it shrinks from edges of pan. Let cool and cut into squares.
- Mandy’s Hints: The above recipe is written just as it appears in the book. I just use butter (softened to room temperature, as always) as the “butter and lard combined”.
- You can omit the nuts, which I do, as I’ve discovered quite a few people are not fans of nuts in their brownies (myself included!).
- I have made these with chocolate chips – um, may I say that makes them YUM YUM YUM Brownies!!!!!!
- I baked these at 350 degrees for about 30-40 minutes.
*The Amish Cooking cookbook has hundreds (maybe thousands? I haven’t counted and don’t plan on it..) of recipes and no names were listed as to whom to give credit to for the actual individual recipes. Therefore, I can not give credit to the proper person for these delicious brownies.
